Why is this important?
The Institute for Constitutional Human Rights (ICHR) has decided to prepare a new translation of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania, as there are currently three different translations available online: the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania on the website. on the website and a project being carried out by several US universities constituteproject.org translation version. Since English is currently the primary source of information globally about Lithuania and its legal system, it is essential to have a unified, improved, and more accurate English translation of the Constitution of Lithuania.
The KATI translation stands out because it is closer and more accurate to the Lithuanian version, using a more precise legal terminology dictionary in English. This translation does not use the English word ‘shall’, thus not distorting the provisions written in the original language. For easier citation, the articles are numbered.
The translation completed by KATI is an independent and privately funded translation, undertaken over six months by four KATI founders, three of whom are lawyers and one a constitutional scholar. Moreover, English is the native language for two of them. The aim of the unified English translation of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania is to help foreign readers better understand the Lithuanian constitutional system, regardless of whether the foreigner is a student, legal scholar, judge, public servant or NGO volunteer.
